Prof Debatosh Guha

Debatosh Guha is a Professor & HoD of Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics, University of Calcutta, India. He is also associated with the department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, and served the same as HAL Chair Professor.

He received the B.Tech. and M.Tech. degrees from the University of Calcutta in 1987 and 1989, respectively and started his career as Project Engineer in Webel Telecommunication Industries Limited. After graduating with a PhD in microwave engineering from Calcutta University, he joined the same University as an Assistant Professor in 1994. He spent about two years with the Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, Ontario as a Visiting Research Professor working largely on the developments of various low profile microwave and wireless antennas.

He has researched in developing microstrips and dielectric resonator antenna technologies. Defected Ground Structure (DGS) -inspired antenna is one of his major areas of contribution. He has published 70+ papers in top Journals, 150+ conference articles, and a Book entitled ‘Microstrip and Printed Antennas: New Trends, Techniques, and Applications’ from Wiley, UK. He developed commercial indoor/outdoor wireless antennas for a North American industry operating since 2007.

Professor Guha is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), National Academy of Sciences, Indian (NASI), West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (WAST), and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE). He is a Senior Member of IEEE and recipient of some notable awards which include IETE Ram Lal Wadhwa Award 2016 (New Delhi), IEEE AP-S Raj Mittra Travel Grant Award 2012 (Chicago); URSI Young Scientist Award 1996 (Lille, France);  and Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Prize 1984 (New Delhi).

He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters and a Section Editor of INAE Letters. He served IEEE Kolkata Section as the Chair (2013-2014); IEEE AP-MTT Kolkata Chapter as the Founding Chair (2004) and Chair (2010-2011). He conceptualized and initiated two flagship IEEE sponsored conferences in India in 2007 and 2010 in the fields of Electromagnetics and Antenna Engineering.

His current research interests include DGS-integration technique for advanced antenna design, unconventional modes and their applications in Dielectric Resonator Antennas, wideband and ultrawideband antennas, Specific antennas for space and wireless industries.

Dr V V Srinivasan

V.V. Srinivasan  obtained his M.Tech degree in Microwave Electronics from Delhi University, India, in 1986.  Subsequently he joined ISRO and was  involved in the development of antennas for spacecrafts, airborne radar applications and ground station antennas.  His area of work includes phased array antennas for spacecraft applications, microstrip antennas and arrays, high efficiency – light weight reflector antennas, broadband antennas, ground station antennas, feeds for reflector antennas.  Spaceborne Phased Array Antennas with dual circular polarization capability is designed by him have been flown and widely used to transmit high quality images in state of the art remote sensing satellites.   His area of work also includes ground station antennas including RF design of the antenna and associated feeds.  Important  contributions have been made in the design and realization of the 32mtr beam waveguide ground station antenna of ISRO (IDSN-32).  Currently he is Director of the ISRO Telemetry,  Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC). ISTRAC, is entrusted with the major responsibility to provide tracking support for all the satellite and launch vehicle missions of ISRO. The major objectives of the centre are: carrying out mission operations of all  operational remote sensing and scientific satellites, providing Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TTC) services from launch vehicle lift-off till injection of satellite into orbit and to estimate its preliminary orbit in space and hardware and software developmental activities that enhance the capabilities of ISTRAC for providing flawless TTC and Mission Operations services. Towards, these objectives, ISTRAC has established a network of ground stations at Bengaluru, Lucknow, Mauritius, Sriharikota, Port Blair, Thiruvananthapuram, Brunei, Biak (Indonesia) and the Deep Space Network Stations. and is taking care of the Ground Station Network Area and Radar Development Area.

He has published about 100 technical papers in various national / international conferences and journals.   He is an active IEEE volunteer and served the Bangalore section in various capacities and chaired the section in 2010 and 2011.  He is a Senior Member of IEEE.

Dr C J Reddy

BIO: Dr. C.J. Reddy is the Vice President, Business Development-Electromagnetics for Americas at Altair Engineering, Inc.( At Altair, he is leading the marketing and support of commercial 3D electromagnetic software, FEKO ( in Americas. Dr. Reddy is also the President of Applied EM Inc, a small company specializing in innovative antenna design and development. Dr. Reddy is a Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and also a Senior Member of Antenna Measurement Techniques Association (AMTA). He has been elected Fellow of the Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society (ACES) in 2012. Dr. Reddy served on ACES Board of Directors from 2006 to 2012 and is currently serving as the Secretary of ACES. He published 37 journal papers, 77 conference papers and 18 NASA Technical Reports to date. Dr. Reddy is a co-author of the book, “Antenna Analysis and Design Using FEKO Electromagnetic Simulation Software,” published in June 2014 by SciTech Publishing (now part of IET). Dr. Reddy was the General Chair of ACES 2011 Conference held in Williamsburg, VA during March 27-31, 2011. And alsoACES 2013 conference, Monterey CA (March 24-28, 2013) as well as the General Chair of ACES 2015 conference held in Williamsburg, Virginia during March 22-26, 2015. He was the Co-General Chair of 2014 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting held during July 6-11, 2014 in Memphis, TN. Dr. Reddy is the General Chair for AMTA 2018 conference to be held in Williamsburg, Virginia during November 3-8, 2018.

Title of  the Talk: Pushing the Boundaries of Computational Electromagnetics: Application to Airborne antennas and radomes


Advances in computational electromagnetic tools have made possible design and optimization of airborne antennas and radomes. Numerical approaches that include full-wave techniques such as Method of Moments (MoM), Multilevel Fast Multipole Method (MLFMM) and asymptotic techniques such as Physical Optics (PO) and Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD) are being utilized to solve many challenging problems that were not possible in the past. In this talk, an overview of various advanced numerical techniques that are useful for airborne antenna designs and placement studies will be presented. Keeping the present-day challenges in mind, a complete solution for the design and analysis of radomes, from characterizing the wall construction materials through transmission loss analysis, to the full 3D radome analysis for calculating the radome induced effects will be presented. We will also discuss the design and analysis of Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) radomes.

Sudhakar K. Rao received Ph.D degree in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1980. During the period 1976-1977 and 1980-1981 he worked at ECIL, Hyderabad and LRDE, Bangalore on reflector antennas and phased array antennas for airborne applications. He worked as a post-doctoral fellow at University of Trondheim, Norway and then as a research associate at University of Manitoba during 1981-1983. During 1983-1996, he worked at Spar Aerospace Limited (now MDA), Montreal, Canada, as a Staff Scientist and developed advanced antennas for several satellite communications. From 1996-2003 he worked as Chief Scientist/Technical Fellow at Hughes/Boeing Satellite Systems and developed multiple beam antennas and reconfigurable beam payloads for commercial and military applications. During the period 2003-2010, he worked as a Corporate Senior Fellow at Lockheed Martin Space Systems and developed antenna payloads for fixed satellite, broadcast satellite, and personal communication satellite services. He is currently a Technical Fellow at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, Redondo Beach, CA working on advanced antenna systems for space & aircraft applications for next generation payloads.

Dr. Rao developed antenna payloads for more than 70 satellites including first mobile satellite M-Sat, first Direct Broadcast Satellite with local channels (DirecTV-4S), first multiple beam antenna at Ka-band for personal communications satellites and first V/W band satellite antenna. His work on development of radiation templates for complex radiation patterns of satellite antennas for interference analysis was adopted and recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)/CCIR in 1992 as the world-wide standard for satellite manufacturers and operators. He authored over 170 technical papers and has 46 U.S patents. He authored and co-edited three text book volumes on “Handbook of Reflector Antennas and Feed Systems” that were published in June 2013 by the Artech House.

Dr. Rao is an IEEE Life Fellow  and a Fellow of IETE. He received several awards and recognitions that include 2002 Boeing’s Special Invention Award for series of patents on satellite antenna payloads, 2003 Boeings’ technical achievement award, Lockheed Martin’s Inventor of Technology award in 2005 & 2007, IEEE Benjamin Franklin Key Award in 2006, Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year in 2008, and Asian American Engineer of the year award in 2008. He received IEEE Judith Resnik Technical Field Award in 2009 for pioneering work in aerospace engineering. He is the recipient of the IETE’s 2015 Prof. S.N. Mitra Memorial award and the Distinguished Alumni Professional Achievement Award from his almamater National Institute of Technology, Warangal, India in 2016. Dr. Rao recently received IEEE Region 6 Outstanding Engineer Award for 2017 and the 2017 Northrop Grumman’s President Award for innovations. He received best reviewer recognition by the IEEE Transactions on Antennas & Propagation Journal for the years 2014 and 2015. Dr. Rao is appointed as the Distinguished Lecturer by the IEEE APS for a three year period (2014-2016) and before that he served as the AdCOM member for IEEE APS during 2011-2013. He was the Chair for the IEEE APS “Industry Initiatives Committee” during 2011-2015, IEEE APS Fellow Evaluation Committee member from 2015, Associate Editor for the IEEE Antennas & Propagation Magazine’s “Antenna Applications Corner”, Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas & Propagation, Special Session Organizer/Chair for the last six IEEE APS/URSI Symposia, and Technical Program Committee member for IEEE APS/URSI Symposia since 2004.

Satellite Communication Antennas – Challenges for Next Generation Payloads

Satellite communications field has recently introduced several new satellite services. These include local-channel broadcast for direct broadcast satellite service (DBS), high capacity K/Ka-band personal communication satellite (PCS) service, hosted payloads, mobile satellite services using very large deployable reflectors, high power hybrid satellites etc. All these satellite services are driven by the operators need to reduce the cost of satellite and pack more capability into a single satellite. Antenna sub-system design, mechanical packaging on the spacecraft and RF performance are very critical for these satellites. This talk will cover recent developments in the areas of antenna systems for FSS, BSS, PCS, & MSS satellite communications. Advanced antenna system designs for contoured beams, multiple beams, and reconfigurable beams will be presented. Multiple beam antenna (MBA) concepts and their advantages compared to conventional contoured beams will be introduced.

Next generation satellite systems for navigational and high frequency payloads require advanced antenna systems to meet the demanding requirements in terms of generating plurality of beams from a single antenna, beam re-configurability, multiple band operation, low-loss antennas, and stable phase center with frequency for better location accuracy. The talk will focus on existing technologies, limitations, advantages of the next generation payloads, RF performance and hardware implementation challenges. A dual-band antenna working at very high frequencies for future payloads capable of a ten-fold increase in satellite capacity will be discussed. Relevant antenna designs and hardware aspects will be presented.

Dr. Paul Rosen

Dr. Paul Rosen is currently Project Scientist for NASA-ISRO synthetic aperture radar mission concept at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Until 2012, he was the manager of the Radar Science and Engineering Section and Project Scientist for the DESDynI Mission Concept at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. His assignments at JPL have centered on scientific and engineering research and development of radar instruments and applications.

Dr. Rosen was a team leader on the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, for which he received NASA’s Exceptional Service Medal (2001) and NASA’s Exceptional Achievement Medal (2002).
Prior to JPL, Dr. Rosen spent two years at Kanazawa University, Kanazawa, Japan. He received a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and his M.S. and B.S in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Rosen is a visiting faculty member and lecturer at the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at Caltech, and has served on the UCLA Extension Program faculty. He was recently elected Fellow of the IEEE, and is a member of the American Geophysical Union. He is an author on over 40 journal and book chapter publications and over 100 conference papers.
